4. SAPSASA CHAMPIONSHIPS REPORT

WAVEMAKERS SWIM UP A SAPSASA STORM

Barossa Wavemakers (16 of whom represented the Barossa and Light District and 3 of whom represented the Gawler District) enjoyed brilliant results at the country division of the SA Primary School championships last Friday.

Stars of the individual event show were Kegan Coulter who won 2 gold and 1 silver, Keian Curthoys-Davies who won 1 gold and 2 silver, Ray Ng who won 1 gold and 1 bronze, Hannah Joseph who raced brilliantly for a gold in the 50 back and silver in the 50 free in her MC events, and Miella Curthoys-Davies who won 1 bronze and 1 silver.

Three wavemakers - Charlotte Shannon, Matilda Lewcock, Sophie Ashmead - took all before them as three of the four swimmers in the 11yrs girls team that blitzed the field in the 4x50 relay event. Ray and Keian also formed part of the 13yrs and under Gawler team that won gold in the medley relay.

Other brilliant results were achieved by Sophie Ashmead who was pipped for the gold by just 0.02 in the 50m breast, Mallika Fletcher with a fantastic 37 second swim in the 50 free which earned her a bronze, and Jonte Reimann with a courageous 1.09 effort in the 100 free which placed him second. Saxon Kearns was another to star with a bronze in the 50 breast. Jonte and Saxon were also part of medal-winning relay teams.

Patrick Timms and Ella Goldsmith made finals, with Ella producing a fantastic 3 sec PB in her 50m breast. Gus Sloane did a great job to make finals in each of his events, ultimately placing 6th in them all. Charlie Semmler and Sage Logan swam exceptionally well in both their individual and relay swims, with Charlie's 36.18 as the first leg swimmer in his 4x50 free relay one of the highlights.

Georgiana Sloane, Banjo Reimann and Imogen Davis all performed well in their relay swims, with Imogen a member of a bronze-medal winning team in the 4x50 free relay.

6. ACCOMMODATION: COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS MURRAY BRIDGE

The SA Country Championships are the most important carnival on our annual swimming calendar which we would like all wavemakers in the T3 squad and above to attend. If your swimmer is currently in the T3 squad or higher, then we would hope they will participate in these championships. Next season’s championships will be held at Murray Bridge from Thursday 9th to Sunday 12th April.

Swimmers must be 10yrs or over on the first day of the carnival to be eligible to swim in an individual event at the championships, but relay teams may comprise swimmers of 7yrs of age.

Qualifying times apply to the championships. However,  swimmers 9yrs of age and under,  along with swimmers 10 and 11years of age who do not make a qualifying time in a particular event, may participate in the so-called “Superfish” component of these championships which will be held on the evening of Thursday the 9th.

The majority of wavemakers are likely to either qualify to swim in an individual event, or to swim in the Superfish carnival, and/or to be selected in a relay team for the championships. This means our club could be represented by as many as 50 swimmers in one, both, or all three of these categories.

With many other clubs having already commenced their planning for this event, accommodation in the Murray Bridge precinct is already scarce. We have been fortunate to have Tammy Kearns searching for potential places to say, and she has located a large group accommodation facility in Tailem Bend, about 15 minutes from Murray Bridge. A number of families have already snapped up the rooms on offer, but a few still remain. Reserving a room with Tammy now may save a headache later on, so if you would like to stay with our team at the bunk house, please let Tammy know immediately.

Please see Tammy’s email below.

Thank you.

Tony

Hello Barossa Swimming Families,

I was asked to look around for accommodation alternatives for January 2020 Country Swimming Championships in Murray Bridge

I have been looking around for large group accommodation to reduce the cost for families. There are motel rooms, hotel rooms and some cabins available in Murray Bridge.

I have found a new bunk house complex built for groups located in Tailem Bend, about 15 minutes from Murray Bridge.

This facility is available in January, but we need an indication of interested families.

There are 22 rooms available. 4 family rooms (double bed and bunk); 8 rooms with adjoining access, with 2 double beds only (for families if required) and two rooms with a double bed only.

Each room has air conditioning, a television and a fridge. All linen provided. There are only shared bathroom facilities, no en-suite.

There is a large group kitchen, outdoor facilities with a tv and a lounge area.

The nightly cost is $1250. If we fill ALL rooms the per room cost would be $50 per double $100 per family or adjoining room, otherwise the cost will need to be split per person. The more rooms that are filled the cheaper it is for all.

Please check out the website for photographs of the rooms, facilities and grounds.

Please Google:  Tailem Bend Bunk House.

Please pass this email to other swimming families ASAP so we can get numbers from interested families. If we have enough interest we will collect deposits next week, which will be on nights accommodation cost, $50 double room or $100 family or adjoining room.

If you are not sure if your child will qualify for country championships please talk to Coach Tony or Coach Scott and they can give you an indication.

Please register your interest with Tammy Kearns 0418853459 by text or email tnottlekearns@yahoo.com.au or with Ange Curthoys by Friday 29th March.

Regards,

Tammy Kearns

7. STATE SC CHAMPIONSHIPS – WED 17th JULY to SUN 21st JULY

SA State SC (short course) championships will be held from Wednesday 17th July to Sunday 21st July.

All swimmers aged 10yrs and over on the first day of this event are eligible to compete at these championships, and all eligible wavemakers should now begin to aim for the STATE CHAMPIONSHIP qualifying times which are attached to this newsletter.

Congratulations to those swimmers who achieved state qualifying times at the Starplex meet yesterday. (if unsure, please check your times and see)
